ABOUT JMI

Jon Michael Iverson is a Minneapolis-based pianist, educator, and arts leader. He has spent twenty years at MacPhail Center for Music, one of the largest community music schools in the country, where he serves as Director of Instrumental and Vocal Instruction, overseeing about 115 faculty who teach close to 3,500 students. He holds a Doctor of Education in Leadership from the University of St. Thomas, where his dissertation examined how a community music school survives, and even thrives, through decades of change. He earned his Master of Music in Piano Performance and Pedagogy at Westminster Choir College and his Bachelor of Arts in Piano Performance at the University of St. Thomas.

As a pianist, Iverson has performed throughout the Twin Cities as a soloist, chamber musician, and collaborative pianist, including two-piano performances with his wife, pianist E. Pınar Başgöze. He began teaching at fourteen and still teaches at MacPhail, where he has also founded programs including the MacPhail Chamber Choir, in partnership with the Minnesota Chorale, and co-founded the Iverson Inspirational Merit Scholarship. His creative practice now also includes exploring AI as a new musical instrument, guided by the belief that runs through all of his work: that music is one of the most important things in human life, and deserves to be treated that way.
